Economic Recovery – NationwideMaria E. RobertsPeople who care about other people need to pull out all stops in support of President Obama's economic stimulus package. Labor economist Heidi Shierholz reports that the total number of Americans working or needing work required the creation of 1.5 million new jobs over the last 12 months. But we lost 2.6 million jobs over that period, so we are 4.1 million jobs short of what our people need.Many in Congress don't like the proposed stimulus package, favoring more tax cuts and less spending on job creation. They forget that a dollar in tax cuts has the same effect on the deficit as does a dollar in spending. But spending on job creation can mitigate our high unemployment and under-employment rate, and at this time job creation must be job 1. As long as those holding the new jobs perform work that is needed, job creation is money well spent.Our bridges, roads and other infrastructure are in great need of repair and preventive maintenance. We have a tremendous nursing shortage and primary care health care providers are scarce in many areas. The cohort of air traffic controllers appointed by Pres. Reagan when he fired the unionized controllers is reaching retirement age and trained replacements are needed for the safety of the flying public. Our country is well served by creating jobs in these and other essential fields.It is critical that our senators and representatives know that we support job creation and the Obama economic stimulus.
